Guest Speaker Geoff Holt MBE, DL
Geoff, already a transatlantic sailor when it happened, was paralysed in a swimming accident in 1984 in the British Virgin Islands and has been quadriplegic, dependent upon a wheelchair ever since. This did not deter him from advancing in his inspirational sailing career and in 1995 he became the inaugural Chairman of RYA Sailability, a role he held for six years leading the RYAs programme for disabled sailors. In 2007 he became the first quadriplegic person to sail single-handed around Great Britain. In 2009, against all advice, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean unassisted right back to the bay where his life was so significantly changed 25 years earlier. He was awarded an MBE for "Services to Disabled Sailing" in 2010 and named as the Yachting Journalists Association Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year shortly after. He was made a Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire in 2012. He is a Board director of the RYA and a Council member of the RNLI. He is patron and ambassador for several charities for people with disabilities. He founded and heads a charity called Wetwheels which this year will be commissioning it’s fifth 40’ catamaran power boat custom designed so people with any disability can enjoy being out at sea involved with a number of different activities. On top of all that Geoff earned 20 years experience in marketing & PR working for international accountancy firms. He holds a degree in Antiques and Auctioneering. He is the author of "Walking on Water" and is an utterly inspirational professional speaker. He enjoys a particularly close relationship with the British Virgin Islands and he and his family have been made honorary belongers there, an honour given to very few.
